During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the outdoors into your house and during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from inside the house to the outdoors. A reversing valve located in the outdoor unit can change the direction of the refrigerant flow for cooling as well as for defrosting the outdoor coils in winter. The fact that a Heat Pump will move heat rather than create heat, this system can provide excellent space conditioning at as little as one quarter of the cost of operating a conventional style heating or cooling system (Split System/Furnace & AC System).

The most common type of heat pump is the air-source heat pump. This type of Heat Pump transfers heat between your house and the outside air. With today’s new technologies, heat pumps can help reduce your electricity use for heating by roughly 50% compared to furnaces and baseboard heaters. The high-efficiency heat pumps will also dehumidify better than most standard central air conditioners, resulting in less energy usage and greater cooling comfort in those hot summer months.

Most heat pumps use electric resistance heaters as a backup for cold weather, heat pumps can also be installed on a furnace to supplement the heat pump in emergency backup heat. The combustion fuel half of the system could be propane, natural gas, oil, this is commonly known as a hybrid system.
